Limewash, Romabio masonry paint, and brick staining

Brick and stone need finishes that let them breathe. We use mineral-based limewash, Romabio masonry paint, and brick stain to update masonry while keeping its texture and character.

Three finishes, three different looks

Limewash

Made from lime and water, limewash soaks into brick and stone for a soft, matte, slightly chalky look with natural variation. It can be left solid or partly washed back for an aged, old-world feel, and it weathers gracefully over time.

Romabio masonry flat

A breathable mineral paint that gives a more even, solid color than limewash while still letting moisture escape, so it won't trap water and peel the way standard acrylic paint can on masonry.

Brick staining

Stain changes the color of brick without coating over it, so it still reads as real brick. It's a good fit for updating dated orange or mismatched brick while keeping the texture.

Where these finishes work best

  • Exterior brick homes, chimneys, and garden walls
  • Interior brick fireplaces and accent walls
  • Stone and stucco that needs a breathable finish
  • Mismatched brick from additions or repairs

Why breathability matters here

Masonry absorbs and releases moisture. Sealing it under a standard plastic-based paint can trap that moisture, and in a freeze-thaw climate like ours that can lead to peeling paint and damaged brick faces. Mineral finishes like limewash and Romabio let the wall breathe, which is why we recommend them for most brick and stone.

Common questions

Is limewash permanent?

Limewash bonds into porous masonry, but it's designed to soften and wear gradually over the years, which is part of its look. It can be refreshed with another coat when you want a crisper finish.

Limewash or Romabio, which should I choose?

Choose limewash for a soft, varied, old-world look. Choose Romabio masonry flat for a more uniform painted color that still breathes. We'll show you both during the estimate.

Can you limewash over painted brick?

Limewash needs bare, porous masonry to soak into, so it usually won't work over existing paint. Romabio and other mineral paints have options for previously painted surfaces.

Can I limewash an interior fireplace?

Yes. Interior fireplaces and brick walls are some of the most popular limewash projects, and they're usually a one- to two-day job.
